SORSOGON CITY, Philippines — September 19, 2025. Student leaders of Mercedes B. Peralta Senior High School gathered for a meaningful talk on Gender Equality and Inclusion as part of the 2025 Student Leadership Development Program: Learners’ Convergence Activity.
The activity was sponsored by the Schools Division Office – School Governance and Operations Division (SDO–SGOD), under the leadership of Chief Florena Deuna, and organized by Project Development Officers I (PDO I) Ms. Vivian D. Paz and Ms. Anabel J. Britanico.

To deepen the learners’ grasp of the topic, participants engaged in scenario role-playing that simulated the real-life struggles of student leaders facing gender-related barriers. Through the activity, learners were able to step into the shoes of peers who encounter stereotypes, exclusion, or bias—allowing them to not only understand the issues in theory but also to feel the challenges first-hand. The exercise sparked reflection on how leadership can either reinforce or dismantle such barriers, and how inclusivity must always guide school leadership.

With a focus on empowering young leaders, the session emphasized the importance of gender-responsive leadership, inclusivity in decision-making, and respect for diversity. Participants reflected on how leadership rooted in equality helps build safe and supportive learning environments where all students can thrive, regardless of gender identity or background.
The initiative aligns with the broader direction of the Division of Sorsogon City, guided by the message of Superintendent Dr. William E. Gando, who consistently emphasizes that gender and development must be embedded in all aspects of school life — from governance to student leadership — to ensure that schools remain safe, nurturing, and inclusive spaces.
By engaging student leaders in conversations and experiential activities on equality and inclusion, the event reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to the DepEd core values — Makadiyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, at Makabansa — as foundations for responsive and sustainable education.
